Adoption Process
How do I adopt a dog from Mila's Mutts?
The first step is filling out an application on our website, it is listed under available dogs.
If the application is the right fit for the dog, we ask several follow up questions and do a home check. The next step is setting up a time to chat with the potential adopter. We go over more background about the dog, the environment they come from, vetting process, and the adoption process before we ask the foster family to make contact.
The potential adopters have the chance to chat with the foster family. They can ask them more questions about eating, sleeping, pottying, energy level, share photos/videos, etc and set up a meet to adopt. The meet is with intent to adopt, be prepared to bring the new dog home with you. We ask that the potential adopters meet the dog within 48 hours of contact unless they are more then 90 miles away. You will get a chance to meet and hang out with the new potential pup, make sure its a good fit for you and your family. We encourage you to bring the whole family including dogs if you have any.
If the family would like to officially adopt the dog, we have them sign a adoption contract, pay the adoption fee and take an adoption photo. The fee is due at the time of adoption.
Can I meet the dog before adopting?
If the dog is already in one of our foster homes, absolutely! The city & state of where the dog is located is included in their bio. If the dog is still in a shelter, they won't be available to meet until the transport arrives.
How do you blindly adopt a dog out from a shelter?
We are very transparent to potential adopters about our dogs. Our insurance doesn’t let allow us to adopt out aggressive dogs with a past history. Our dogs are completely vetted with a behavior assessment done by a volunteer who knows the dog. We get photos of each dog, along with solo videos and videos of them in social settings. We can ask for more, especially if the family interested in adopting them has kids or cats. We can have the dogs tested with other dogs, cats and/or children and send video of the interactions. We've been working with our current shelter partners for a long time, and we've established a great system to match dogs with their future families.
Do you preform home checks?
We do home checks via video submission.
Does Mila's Mutts provide any help or support?
Anyone who adopts from us, automatically becomes a part of the Mila’s Mutts family. That’s for life. If anyone has an issues, problems, concerns, questions or anything, we are here to help and support. Its our job to set the proper expectations for the adopters. We make it clear, dogs need time to decompress, what that looks like and much more! We even have an Adopters group on Facebook that you can join once your new family member comes home: https://www.facebook.com/groups/414895017010239
What does the adoption fee cover?
A fully vetted dog - Fixed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, exam by our local Vet, flea and tick prevention, dewormed, heart-worm test and any transportation costs.
Do the dogs come with anything?
All of our dogs are handed off with a brand new martingale collar, leash, dog food to help with their transition, dewormer if needed, and our male dogs come with 2 reusable belly bands if still potty training.
Do dogs ever get returned?
Yes, but very rarely! We will always take a dog back. Our adoption contract states, when a past adopter notifies us they would like to return a dog, they have 24 hours to return the dog to us. We always want our dogs back so we can ensure they never end up in another shelter.
How can you help?
We always need volunteers and fosters. We provide all the supplies for fostering and cover any medical care for the dog. Its really rewarding to help dogs find their forever homes!
